ST. PAUL, Minn. (Valley News Live) – Gov. Tim Walz authorized the Minnesota National Guard to deploy in support of local law enforcement Thursday following a shooting involving federal immigration enforcement agents in south Minneapolis.

The governor signed Executive Order 26-01 on Thursday, Jan. 8, which allows National Guard personnel to protect critical infrastructure and assist local law enforcement as needed. The Minnesota State Patrol also mobilized 85 members of its Mobile Response Team to support law enforcement efforts in the Twin Cities, according to the governor’s office.

Under the executive order, the Adjutant General can place National Guard personnel, equipment and facilities on state active duty to coordinate public safety and security services. The Guard will serve in a support role, protecting property and safeguarding critical infrastructure while allowing local law enforcement to focus on community safety and investigations, according to the order.

The deployment provides additional resources for preparation and planning with local and state law enforcement and emergency management agencies. The order also supports efforts to protect life and property while ensuring public safety and protecting freedom of speech through peaceful demonstrations.

In a statement, Walz praised what he called a peaceful response to the incident.

“Minnesotans have met this moment. Thousands of people have peacefully made their voices heard. Minnesota: thank you. We saw powerful peace,” Walz said in a statement. “We have every reason to believe that peace will hold. Yesterday, I directed the National Guard to be ready should they be needed. They remain ready in the event they are needed to help keep the peace, ensure public safety, and allow for peaceful demonstrations.”
