Fox News anchor Chris Wallace angered a lot of people again over the weekend.

During a segment on his show Fox News Sunday, Wallace defended Fauci following the release of 3,200 pages of emails – including exchanges where he cast doubt on the lab leak theory and offered guidance on masking he would later reverse.

Wallace told colleague John Roberts during a discussion on the network about COVID-19’s origins that he had read reports on Fauci’s emails and “a number of the emails” himself, concluding, “There’s no smoking gun there.”

“This is highly political. … You’re seeing it as a major talking point for Republicans,” Wallace said.

Wallace then called Fauci a “devoted public servant for 40 years.”

“We outta take the politics out of this,” Wallace said. “I think there certainly has been too much politics already.”

“When Donald Trump — back when he was president — suggested that China may have played a role in it, that it wasn’t a naturally occurring virus, I think there was a knee-jerk reaction from some Democrats, from some people in the media, to say, ‘Well, if Trump says this is a possibility, it can’t be a possibility,’” Wallace said.

“That was a mistake then, I think it’s a mistake now to over-politicize it,” he added.

It has been a tough week for Fauci, the man in charge of handling the coronavirus pandemic.

After the Washington Post published a trove of Fauci’s emails last week, Fox News host Tucker Carlson accused Fauci of perjury.

The accusation comes after a raft of Fauci’s emails were released suggesting the expert had lied to the Senate about what virus research was being carried out by China in the lab in Wuhan.

The messages also reveal that virus experts were warning Fauci that coronavirus may have been created in the lab – a notion Fauci publicly dismissed.

Fauci even received a message from the president of a non-profit organization thanking him for publicly disputing the lab leak theory.

The EcoHealth Alliance used its grant from the National Institutes of Health to study coronaviruses in Chinese bats and sent the Wuhan lab nearly $600,000 over the course of five years, beginning in 2014.

“In retrospect that looks a lot like perjury,” Carlson said, in reference to testimony Fauci gave to Sen. Rand Paul when he denied that any funds were given to the Wuhan lab for “gain of function research.”

“We do know that starting early last year, a lot of people in the NIH were worried that Covid had not occurred naturally – that it had been manipulated in a lab in China – and yet they seem determined to hide that fact from the public,” he said.

Carlson also accused Fauci of lying when he said last year that the coronavirus had originated from bats.

“At that point, he could not have known that. That was dishonest,” he said.
