GOP Rep. Adam Kinzinger called House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy a ‘feckless, weak, tired man’ after the top House Republican refused to condemn the Republican National Committee for censuring him and his Republican colleague, Rep. Liz Cheney.
Kinzinger told The Bulwark Podcast’s Charlie Sykes that he believed that McCarthy thought Cheney, who was previously No. 3 in the House GOP conference, would ‘go away’ after they demoted her from leadership.
Instead she and Kinzinger joined the Democrat-led House January 6 committee, which is why the RNC voted to censure them on Friday.
Now McCarthy ‘looks like a feckless, weak, tired man that is doing the bidding of whatever Majorie Taylor Greene thinks is gonna raise her money that day,’ Kinzinger said.
‘Even if he does somehow become speaker, he’s gonna have to have a good cellphone plan because he will be calling Marjorie Taylor Greene every day asking her what he can, what he can’t, do,’ Kinzinger said.
‘I mean, my goodness. Having the title of speaker but then really being, you know, subservient to a sophomore in Congress who’s crazy and a number of them – why would you even want that?’ the Illinois Republican – who is retiring after this term – asked.
‘The Republicans may win the majority, but that is gonna be, I think, when he is hostage to Marjorie Taylor Greene, probably do more damage to the Republican Party than even anything in the next year,’ Kinzinger added.
McCarthy, the House’s GOP leader, was asked about the censures Friday afternoon on Fox.
‘Look, there is a reason why Adam is quitting. There’s a reason why Liz Cheney is no longer in leadership and has very low poll rating in Wyoming,’ McCarthy replied.
He said the January 6 panel was a ‘pure political committee,’ bringing up how several Congressional Democrats who served on the committee were upset Jeff Zucker resigned from CNN.
‘I think those two individuals would have a hard time ever coming back to Congress,’ McCarthy again said of Kinzinger and Cheney.
