Kyiv is ‘encircled’ by Russian troops with no way out amid impending ‘humanitarian catastrophe’: Mayor Klitschko

By lee brown

Ukraine’s capital, Kyiv, is fully “encircled” by Russian troops — leaving no way out for 2.8 million people now facing “a humanitarian catastrophe,” Mayor Vitali Klitschko said Sunday.

The former heavyweight boxer told The Associated Press that it was now impossible to evacuate the city “because all ways are blocked.”

“Right now we are encircled,” he admitted.

Klitschko confirmed that at least nine civilians had been killed in Kyiv so far, including one child. “We are at the border of a humanitarian catastrophe,” he said of dwindling stocks of food and medicine.

Kharkiv governor says the city “is completely ours” after heavy fighting with Russians

By Ben Kesslen

Kharkiv’s regional governor Oleh Synyehubov said invading Russians have been expelled from the northeastern city after intense fighting.

“Control over Kharkiv is completely ours!” Synyehubov wrote on Facebook Sunday, adding the army is currently working to make sure the city is “completely cleansed of the enemy.”

“The Russian enemy is absolutely demoralized,” the Kharkiv governor added.

Russian troops entered Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second-largest city, on Saturday. The city is located just 25 miles south of the Russian border.
