Kevin McCarthy says he DOES think Trump should resign in new recording played by Rachel Maddow: House Minority Leader called New York Times report ‘totally false’ just hours earlier

  • House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy had been planning to ask former President Donald Trump to resign in the wake off January 6 Capitol riot
  • McCarthy wanted Trump removed from the party according to  New York Times reporters Alexander Burns and Jonathan Martin who have written a book
  • McCarthy has denied that the story is true declaring it to be a ‘big fat lie’
  • On Thursday evening MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow played a recorded phone call that depicted a January 10 exchange between McCarthy and Rep. Liz Cheney
  • The exchange confirmed the Times’ original reporting and McCarthy’s intention

In the recording of a January 10 House Republican Leadership call, McCarthy is heard discussing the Democratic effort to remove Trump from office and saying he would tell Trump, ‘I think it will pass and it would be my recommendation he should resign.’

Earlier Thursday, after the Times published its initial story describing the conversation, McCarthy released a statement calling it ‘totally false and wrong.’
