Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-CO) announced that she will forgo running for reelection in Colorado’s 3rd Congressional District to instead run for the state’s 4th District.

The race for Colorado’s 3rd District was one of the closest of the 2022 midterm elections, with Boebert only winning by a few hundred votes. The Colorado Republican made the announcement in a video posted on Facebook.

“It’s the right decision for me personally and the right decision for our conservative movement,” she said. The National Republican Congressional Caucus praised the decision, painting it as a move that would ensure Colorado’s 3rd District would remain red.

“Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to the national Democrats who spent all year wishing Colorado’s 3rd was winnable. Republicans will hold this seat,” NRCC spokeswoman Delanie Bomar said in a statement.

Colorado’s 4th District is far safer than Boebert’s own precarious seat, with incumbent Rep. Ken Buck (R-CO) winning by over 24 percentage points. Buck is one of many aging incumbents who announced his retirement this year.
