Prosecutors in Donald Trump‘s hush money case have asked for a 30-day delay in the start of the trial to review new evidence.
The trial over claims the former president, 77, falsified records to cover up payments to porn star Stormy Daniels was due to begin on March 25.
But the start date could now be pushed back due to a recent disclosure of thousands of pages of new documents by prosecutors led by Manhattan DA Alvin Bragg.
Trump last week asked Justice Juan Merchan to delay his trial on 34 counts until the Supreme Court finishes reviewing his claim of presidential immunity.
The Supreme Court announced last month that it will hear arguments in Trump’s immunity case on April 25.
Without addressing that request, prosecutors with Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg’s office said the U.S. Attorney’s office in Manhattan – which had previously looked into the allegations – had disclosed more than 100,000 pages to the parties in the case this month, and could soon produce more.
Trump, the Republican candidate to challenge Democratic President Joe Biden in the Nov. 5 election, has pleaded not guilty.
With the Supreme Court agreeing to take the case, it also pushed back Trump’s January 6 alleged insurrection case led by Special Counsel Jack Smith at least until the summer.
It means the trial could be delayed by months, even if the former president loses at the Supreme Court, and if he wins the charges will be dismissed.
The Supreme Court’s 6-3 conservative majority includes three justices appointed by Trump: Neil Gorsuch, Brett Kavanaugh and Amy Coney Barrett.
