The only thing he shoveled was his social media grave.
A Canadian politician is being ripped online after sharing a Twitter pic showing his wife shoveling snow after a 12-hour hospital shift. The obtuse tweet currently boasts over 19,000 retweets and nearly 40,000 likes as of Monday morning.
In the controversial message posted Saturday morning, Manitoba Cabinet Minister Jon Reyes wrote, “Even after a 12 hour night shift at the hospital last night, my wife still has the energy to shovel the driveway.”
“God bless her and all our frontliners,” he added. “Time to make her some breakfast.”
The accompanying photo, taken from inside the house, depicts Reyes’ wife Cynthia digging snow out of their driveway while bundled in a “Fargo”-esque winter coat.
According to TimeAndDate.com, the mercury dropped to a bone-chilling -2 degrees F in Winnipeg on Saturday morning.
Suffice it to say, the picture didn’t sit well with the Twitter peanut gallery, which wondered why Reyes didn’t lend a helping hand.
“Why are you watching and not shoveling? This tweet sucks,” fumed one critic of the gaffe, while another wrote, “He saw his wife shoveling after a 12 hr shift and his first thought was let me tweet about this lol.”
“In the 12 hours she was mopping up after your government’s disaster you couldn’t find some time to shovel it yourself?” spluttered one incredulous commenter, presumably referencing Manitoba’s recent COVID spike.
One detractor tweeted a stock video of a bathrobe-clad man looking outside with the caption, “I should take a picture.”
Another mocked Reyes’ ham-handed offer to make his beleaguered spouse breakfast, snarking, “Hmm…I wonder if she wants Strawberry or Brown Sugar Pop-Tarts.”
However, Cynthia Reyes herself has since come to the defense of her husband, claiming that she volunteered to shovel the driveway in a recent tweet.
Nonetheless, unsympathetic Twitter critics joked that Reyes made her create a Twitter profile just to defend him.
Even after a 12 hour night shift at the hospital last night, my wife still has the energy to finish building the deck. God bless her and all our frontliners. I’m still waiting for breakfast though. Pretty hungry. Trying not to get annoyed. pic.twitter.com/ak99dLbygM
