“Our First Amendment stands as a major block,” he lamented.
Democrat John Kerry, who served as President Joe Biden’s U.S. Special Presidential Envoy for Climate, said last week that the First Amendment was in the way of Democrats’ desire to fight “disinformation.”
Kerry made the extreme remarks during a discussion with the World Economic Forum on Green Energy when asked by an audience member what could be done to fight online disinformation.
“You know there’s a lot of discussion now about how you curb those entities in order to guarantee that you’re going to have some accountability on facts, etc.,” he said. “But look, if people only go to one source, and the source they go to is sick, and, you know, has an agenda, and they’re putting out disinformation, our First Amendment stands as a major block to be able to just, you know, hammer it out of existence.”
“So what we need is to win the ground, win the right to govern, by hopefully winning enough votes that you’re free to be able to implement change,” he added.
He said that the problem was unique to democracies because there was an “absence of a sort of truth arbiter, and there’s no one who defines what facts really are.”
"Our First Amendment stands as a major block to the ability to be able to hammer [disinformation] out of existence. What we need is to win…the right to govern by hopefully winning enough votes that you’re free to be able to implement change."
