Republican House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy has clarified comments he made in which it sounded like he said that Donald Trump wants to be House Speaker.

Later, on Saturday, a McCarthy spokesperson claimed that those were not the words he said.

Speaking to Fox News’ Brian Kilmeade, House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy addressed the exact scenario in which Trump would lead Republican representatives as Speaker of the House if they retake the chamber during the 2022 midterms. As the current House Republican leader, McCarthy would be the obvious choice to fill the position.

“…if you guys do take the House and finish the job, uh, that you almost shocked the world by doing a few months ago and take the house, — you’re only five seats down that maybe he runs for a seat or just appointed as Speaker – would you be for President Trump becoming Speaker?”

McCarthy replied, laughing somewhat nervously about the question, that he had spoken to Trump who had voiced his desire to become Speaker. He said:

“You know, I’ve talked to President Trump many times. He tells me he wants to be Speaker and I think he should be President. But most importantly, if you’re worried about the filibuster, the best way to stop it is win the House. You won’t have to worry about the filibuster again, cause those bills won’t get over there.”

And if you work in time and again, what are the Democrats doing with this majority? Not only do they want to change the election law, they want to make Puerto Rico and Washington D.C. states. Why? They’re doing everything they can to change the structure and constitutionality of our State—of our country—so they can maintain control illegally. That’s something we never want to see happen.”

But after the comments were made, a spokesman for the House Minority Leader said to The Daily Caller that his words were not interpreted correctly.

“McCarthy meant and said he wants ‘me’ to be Speaker, but I understand that might not have sounded crystal clear,” he said.

Many have speculated that Trump could have his eyes on the White House again in 2024 but there is another possibility that was mentioned in an interview he had with radio host Wayne Allyn Root.

The host suggested of Trump campaigning for a spot in the House of Representatives before taking on the challenge of winning back the White House in 2024, The Daily Mail reported.

“Why not, instead of waiting for 2024, and I’m hoping you’ll run in 2024, but why not run in 2022 for the United States Congress? A House seat in Florida. Win big. Lead us to a dramatic landslide victory. Take the House by 50 seats,” the host said.

“Then you become the speaker of the House, lead the impeachment of Biden and start criminal investigations against Biden,” he said. “You’ll wipe him out for this last two years.”

“That’s so interesting,” the 45th President of the United States said. “You know, it’s very interesting.”

An impeachment could not only thwart Biden’s agenda for his last two years but, if successful, could remove him from the White House.

He said that some of his advisors suggested that he campaign to be a senator but he liked the idea of being Speaker.

“But you know what, your idea might be better. It’s very interesting,” he said.

The idea was first thought of by Steve Bannon who mentioned it to Republicans in Boston in February.

“We totally get rid of Nancy Pelosi, and the first act of President Trump as Speaker will be to impeach Joe Biden for his illegitimate activities of stealing the presidency,” he said.
