Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi established a committee after Senate Republicans blocked an independent bipartisan investigation into the riots in the Capitol on January 6.
Washington — Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi has appointed House Land Security Chairman Benny Thompson to chair a new special committee to investigate the January 6 Capitol riots. She also elected Republican Rep. Liz Cheney as a member.
The House of Representatives approved the committee on Wednesday over Republican opposition. Wyoming parliamentarian Dick Cheney, who was removed from GOP leadership this year for criticism of President Donald Trump, was one of two Republicans who supported the formation of the commission.
Pelosi moved to form a committee to investigate attacks by Trump supporters after Senate Republicans blocked an independent bipartisan investigation.
The announcement comes after Kevin McCarthy, a minority leader in the House of Representatives, threatens to deprive the Republican Commission of duty if he accepts an appointment from Pelosi.
