Democrat Mary Peltola will become first native Alaskan in Congress as she snatches House seat from Republican – spoiling former governor’s long-awaited political comeback
- Sarah Palin on Wednesday was defeated in the race to claim Alaska’s only seat in the U.S. House
- Palin, 58, hoped to stage a political comeback in the state where she was governor
- With 93 percent of the vote counted, her Democrat rival Mary Peltola had 51.5 percent, and Palin had 48.5 percent
- The results came 15 days after the August 16 election, in line with the deadline for state elections officials to receive absentee ballots from outside the U.S.
- Peltola tweeted: ‘It is a GOOD DAY’ – and then reminded voters that they needed to vote again in November, to secure the seat for the two-year term
- Palin can run for the seat in the November election, and Peltola urged her supporters to keep donating to her campaign
