A spokesperson for the Biden White House said this week that the administration does not support transgender surgeries for minors.
The statement follows reports that officials in President Joe Biden’s administration pushed to remove age limits for minors who want transgender surgeries.
Staffers for Rachel Levine, the assistant secretary for the Department of Health and Human Services, pushed the World Professional Association for Transgender Health to nix the minimum age requirement for individuals to receive gender-affirming care, according to a report from The New York Times.
An email from a recent court filing revealed that Levine was “confident, based on the rhetoric she is hearing in D.C., and from what we have already seen, that these specific listings of ages, under 18, will result in devastating legislation for trans care.”
The day after that report came out, the Biden Administration announced on X, formerly Twitter, that it does not support transgender surgeries for minors.
President Biden in the past has been very supportive of transgender youth and had even criticized red states for implementing laws that would ban minors from getting gender-affirming care.
According to The Daily Wire, Biden had called Florida’s law banning those under 18 from getting puberty blockers and hormone therapy “close to sinful.”
