Republicans tear into Department of Justice for going after the leading Republican candidate and the ‘two-tier’ justice system under Biden
- McCarthy slammed Special Counsel Jack Smith over a reported third indictment of Donald Trump
- Trump lashed out at Smith on social media earlier on Tuesday
- GOP lawmakers also rallied to his side after word of the forthcoming indictment came
Donald Trump is being targeted by the DOJ because Joe Biden is worried that the former president could win next year’s election, top Republican Kevin McCarthy has claimed.
McCarthy (R-CA) suggested Special Counsel Jack Smith was only plotting to indict the real estate mogul – his third indictment since leaving office – to scupper his bid for a second White House term.
Smith, an ex-war crimes prosecutor already branded as ‘deranged’ by Trump, reports directly to Biden’s Attorney General Merrick Garland.
McCarthy, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, said the whole case was politically motivated.
‘Recently President Trump went up in the polls and was actually surpassing President Biden for reelection. So what do they do now? Weaponize government to go after their No. 1 opponent,’ he told reporters.
‘This is not equal justice. They treat people differently and they go after their adversaries,’ the speaker added.
But McCarthy was heard on a leaked audio recording from after the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol that Trump ‘bears responsibility’ for what happened.
House Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-La.) also suggested the reported forthcoming indictment was merely to hobble Biden’s main political rival.
Scalise said the news comes ahead of the House Oversight Committee hearing testimony from two IRS whistleblowers this week who accuse authorities of granting favorable treatment to First Son Hunter Biden in a recent tax probe.
‘Now you see the Biden administration going after President Trump once again, it begs that question — is there a double standard? Is justice being administered equally?’ he said on Tuesday.
Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia added: ‘Jack Smith has weaponized the federal government against President Trump in a complete lie about January 6 to cover up the crimes of Joe & Hunter Biden and their entire criminal family.’
Smith has not responded to the latest GOP allegations or the former president’s attacks on social media.
The 77-year-old is still dominating the polls in the race to be on the 2024 Republican presidential ticket.
