Russia accused Ukraine Wednesday of launching a drone attack on the Kremlin aimed at assassinating the country’s strongman leader Vladimir Putin, according to reports.
Video of the alleged incident shows a bright explosion over the massive complex — which houses Putin’s residence — but Russian officials said there were no casualties and Putin was not there at the time, the New York Times reported.
Two drones were disabled by state security services, Russia said.
Russia’s claim has not been verified, and Ukrainian officials said Kyiv had nothing to do with the alleged incident.
In a statement, the Kremlin said it “regards these actions as a planned terrorist attack and an attempt on the president” and that the country reserved the right to retaliate.
If the Kremlin’s claims are confirmed to be true, it would be the most aggressive retaliatory strike on Russia since the country launched its invasion of Ukraine in February of last year.
