There is no love lost between Donald Trump and Senate Minority Leader and Kentucky Sen. Mitch McConnell and their relationship is not about to get any better after Trump’s most recent attack on him.
In an email to his supporters on Saturday Trump took aim at the 79-year-old McConnel as he endorsed Rep. Mo Brooks to be the next Kentucky Senator.
“I see that the RINO Senator from Alabama, close friend of Old Crow Mitch McConnell, Richard Shelby, is pushing hard to have his ‘assistant’ fight the great Mo Brooks for his Senate seat. She is not in any way qualified and is certainly not what our Country needs or not what Alabama wants,” he said.
“For Mitch McConnell to be wasting money on her campaign is absolutely outrageous. Vote for Mo Brooks! He stands for America First, and everything Alabama wants. He also has my Complete and Total Endorsement,” he said.
An endorsement from Trump is a major deal in a Republican primary, especially in a state that supports him as much as Kentucky does.
McConnell was endorsed by Trump in 2020 and sailed to victory, so the endorsement of Brooks represents a major roadblock for McConnell and Shelby’s plans.
McConnell and Trump have been butting heads ever since Trump was impeached after the January 6 incident at the Capitol where, afterwards, McConnell attempted to bury Trump and failed.
“A mob was assaulting the Capitol in his name…He was the only one [who could end it.]…The president did not act swiftly, he did not do his job…he watched television happily, happily as the chaos unfolded,” McConnell said.
“They did this because they’d been fed wild falsehoods by the most powerful man on Earth because he was angry he lost an election,” he said. “President Trump is practically and morally responsible.”
“It was obvious that only President Trump could end this … The president did not act swiftly. He did not do his job. He didn’t take steps so federal law could be faithfully executed and order restored,” McConnell said in his takedown of the former president.
“With police officers bleeding and broken glass covering Capitol floors, he kept repeating election lies and praising the criminals,” he said.
“Trump is still liable for everything he did while he’s in office. He didn’t get away with anything yet,” he said as he said that the former president could be criminally prosecuted.
Trump then shredded him in a statement following his diatribe.
“The Republican Party can never again be respected or strong with political ‘leaders’ like Sen. Mitch McConnell at its helm. McConnell’s dedication to business as usual, status quo policies, together with his lack of political insight, wisdom, skill, and personality, has rapidly driven him from Majority Leader to Minority Leader, and it will only get worse. The Democrats and Chuck Schumer play McConnell like a fiddle—they’ve never had it so good—and they want to keep it that way! We know our America First agenda is a winner, not McConnell’s Beltway First agenda or Biden’s America Last…,” he said.
“It was a complete election disaster in Georgia, and certain other swing states. McConnell did nothing, and will never do what needs to be done in order to secure a fair and just electoral system into the future. He doesn’t have what it takes, never did, and never will.
“My only regret is that McConnell ‘begged’ for my strong support and endorsement before the great people of Kentucky in the 2020 election, and I gave it to him. He went from one point down to 20 points up, and won. How quickly he forgets. Without my endorsement, McConnell would have lost, and lost badly. Now, his numbers are lower than ever before, he is destroying the Republican side of the Senate, and in so doing, seriously hurting our Country,” Trump said.
“Likewise, McConnell has no credibility on China because of his family’s substantial Chinese business holdings. He does nothing on this tremendous economic and military threat.
“Mitch is a dour, sullen, and unsmiling political hack, and if Republican Senators are going to stay with him, they will not win again. He will never do what needs to be done, or what is right for our Country. Where necessary and appropriate, I will back primary rivals who espouse Making America Great Again and our policy of America First. We want brilliant, strong, thoughtful, and compassionate leadership,” he said.
