- Rep. Cori Bush, indicated that there’s more to be done for black Americans than mark Juneteenth, the end of slavery in the U.S., as a federal holiday
- ‘It’s Juneteenth AND reparations. It’s Juneteenth AND end police violence + the War on Drugs,’ she tweeted Wednesday night
- She also pushed for the end of ‘housing + education apartheid’ and teaching people the ‘truth about white supremacy in our country’
- ‘Black liberation in its totality must be prioritized,’ she encouraged
- Bush’s comments came as the House of Representatives voted to make Juneteenth a federal holiday Wednesday night
- 14 Republicans voted against June 19th becoming a ‘National Independence Day’ because they believe it would create ‘confusion’ with Independence Day
- GOP Rep. Thomas Massie said it will ‘push Americans to pick one of those two days as their Independence Day based on their racial identity’
